Is THIS cool??

07/06/25 for jazz big band

Around 1990 I rehearsed a couple of times with an Chuck-Brown-Chicago-gogo-funk-inspired band from Edinburgh called DC Ellis. I came up with a four-bar horn riff for one of their tunes – I don't think they ever used it, but it has stuck in my head ever since.

The other referent for this tune is the Maceo Parker album 'Life on Planet Groove' (https://www.discogs.com/master/53507-Maceo-Parker-Life-On-Planet-Groove) with, of course, the incomparable Fred Wesley on trombone.

My chart also features unison funky alto sax and trombone, incorporating a version of that horn riff I wrote all those years ago.

The title comes from a sketch from the 1994 comedy show 'The Day Today' superbly acted by Steve Coogan.

This piece lined up soon for rehearsal by the Byres Road Big Band.
